Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman: Senate Must Pass the DREAM Act
With the Senate set to vote on the DREAM Act, Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman called on the Senate to vote for this critical legislation that will provide a path to citizenship for undocumented young people by allowing them to obtain legal immigration status by entering college or the military. The U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the DREAM Act last week, and the Senate could vote this weekend.
“I urge the Senate to pass the DREAM Act. This common-sense legislation has received bipartisan support before and will help to move America forward and strengthen our economy and our security.
“The DREAM Act would allow young people in Florida who lack legal immigration status through no fault of their own, who have worked hard and played by the rules, and who are willing to pursue a higher education or enter into military service to achieve legal status in America. This legislation will make our country safer and more prosperous by tapping into the energy of the next generation of young immigrants. The Senate should not leave this important legislation on the table until next year. I urge the Senate to pass the Dream Act immediately.”
