DEMS PREBUTTAL TO MITT ROMNEY’S SPEECH AT THE FREEDOM TOWER

Today, Mitt Romney is scheduled to give a speech at the Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College.  In response, Millie Herrera, President of the Miami-Dade Democratic Hispanic Caucus, issued the following statement:

“Today Mitt Romney is choosing to give a foreign policy speech at the largest Hispanic Serving Institution in this country — an institution whose funding he would slash.  An institution whose students he’s turned his back on.  Miami Dade College students cannot only continue their educations due to the Pell Grants that President Obama has increased, but its halls served as incubators for the movement formed by the talented, patriotic students we all know as DREAMers.  That the candidate who has the most extreme positions on immigration in his field, who has promised to veto the DREAM Act and claimed the bright students who would benefit from it wanted ‘handout’ would choose Miami Dade College property as his backdrop, is both sad and ironic.

“Mitt Romney once called comprehensive immigration reform ‘reasonable;’ now he campaigns with the architect of Arizona and Alabama’s anti-immigrant laws and derides sensible proposals as ‘magnets.’  Mitt Romney once said it didn’t make sense to deport the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in this country; now he says we should kick them all out, that the answer for families that have lived here for generations is ‘self-deportation.’

“But his dangerous positions are not limited to immigration and education.  Mitt Romney is on the wrong side of every issue of importance to Hispanics.  Latinos stand to lose the most from Romney’s insistence on failed economic policies that brought our economy to the brink of collapse, his his belief that we should let foreclosures hit ‘rock bottom,’ and his commitment to slashing our health care and education.  DREAMers and the entire community knows better than to be fooled by his political posturing.”
