STATEMENT FROM FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRMAN ROD SMITH ON THE 11th CIRCUIT COURT’S OPINION TO UPHOLD FAIR DISTRICTS
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith today issued the following statement in recognition of the 11th Circuit Court’s unanimous opinion upholding the Fair District Amendments. Republican Speaker of the House Dean Cannon has refused to publicize the exact amount spent on his challenge but it appears to be roughly $1.2 million over the last three years in an attempt the thwart the will of 63-percent of Florida voters.
Statement from Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith:
“Rick Scott and the GOP controlled legislature have led one of the most egregious assaults on our voting rights in a generation, and we applaud the appellate court for protecting the right of every Floridian to participate in our democracy. Florida voters overwhelmingly approved Fair Districts last year and just last week, nearly 500 Floridians from across the state stood shoulder-to-shoulder to deliver one simple message: we will fight to protect the voice of every single citizen. The attempt by Florida Republicans to overturn the will of the people in the federal courts has been thoroughly and rightfully rejected. It is time for the Republicans to stop wasting taxpayer dollars and start listening to the voters.”
