Five years ago today, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law. Lilly Ledbetter stood up to pay discrimination after learning she was being paid less than her male counterparts for nearly twenty years for doing the same job. Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant made the following statement:
“Today we celebrate the five-year anniversary of President Barack Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. Lilly Ledbetter’s strength and courage to stand up for what’s right is what this country is built on. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is an important step in ending discrimination in the workplace, though there is more progress to be made.
“Lilly worked hard, played by the rules, but was not afforded the wages she deserved. Today, women only make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. This is wrong and must change. Democrats stand side-by-side with every woman to fight for equality. We won’t stop fighting until workplace discrimination is a thing of the past.
“I hope that when my daughter gets her first job, she will be paid what she deserves. We owe it to our daughters that we win this fight.”
