Parkland Students Speak Out Against Rick Scott’s Gun Proposal

As they returned to school Wednesday, Parkland students made it clear they are “mad” at Rick Scott and Republicans for continuing to prioritize their self-serving politics and the interests of the gun lobby over keeping Floridians safe from gun violence.

The students continued to make clear that Scott’s proposal fails to include the critical gun safety reforms that they are calling for – which is why his proposal has been called “woefully inadequate” by groups like the Florida Coalition To Prevent Gun Violence.

Meanwhile, new reports and editorials from the Palm Beach PostThe Tampa Bay Times, and TPM continued to highlight Scott’s long record of opposing commonsense gun safety measures and the flaws in his latest proposal – including how “Scott has rolled out the red carpet” for assault weapons manufacturers in Florida and is failing to propose adequate funding for mental health services.

Here’s what some of the Parkland Students had to say about his plan:

From Parkland student David Hogg: “I’m mad at our elected officials like Marco Rubio, Rick Scott and Donald Trump.”

From Parkland Student David Hogg: “They won’t gather the strength even to stand up to the NRA, like Marco Rubio, Rick Scott or Donald Trump. They won’t stand up to the NRA and say you don’t own me anymore.”

Today isn’t the first time Parkland students have called Scott out for his self-serving politics, here’s what they’ve said in the past:

From Parkland student Cameron Kasky: “It is my astute belief that the blood of those 17 people is on Rick Scott’s hands;” From Parkland student Chris Grady: “I would just like to thank you again for coming out and listening to us because that’s a lot more than can be said for our so-called President and Governor;” From Parkland student Cameron Kasky: “It’s Rick Scott and Marco Rubio who allowed this to happen. They are enablers;” From Parkland student Cameron Kasky:  “@marcorubio came and took it like a champ and was respectful and kind. @FLGovScott don’t think you can avoid the issue. Don’t think you can avoid #NEVExRAGAIN and the #MarchForOurLives Hide behind your money but know that we are demanding answers and change NOW. We’ll get both;” From Parkland student Chris Grady: “I would just like to thank you again for coming out and listening to us because that’s a lot more than can be said for our so-called President and Governor.”
