This weekend marks the second anniversary of the catastrophic passing of Hurricane Maria through Puerto Rico, causing thousands of deaths and incalculable losses to the island. Two years after the hurricane, Puerto Rico is still waiting for the Trump Administration to release half of the funds that were allocated for the recovery of the island, and that has been held up by the poor response from this administration.
U.S. Representative Darren Soto, Puerto Rican descent and a champion for the people of Puerto Rico, has sent the following statement:
“On this 2nd-year remembrance of Hurricane Maria, one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history, we honor the strength and resiliency of the Puerto Rican people. We’re also recommitted to action. To this day, the Trump Administration continues to hold up over half of the $43 billion in funds that Congress already allocated back in February 2018. This adds tragedy upon tragedy and continues to keep the island from full recovery.
“I’m thrilled our bipartisan legislation to fully fund the Medicaid program for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories already passed out of Committee and now heads to the House for a vote. Our bill increases Medicaid for Puerto Rico from $375 million to $3 billion, annually.
“Our House Democratic Majority will continue to fight for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, hold the Trump administration accountable, and unite to bring Puerto Rico back to prosperity. ¡Puerto Rico se levanta!”
