On Tuesday night, Jacquelyn McMiller won 35.7% of the vote, advancing to the November runoff election to challenge Kevin Anderson. This is a huge win for McMiller, and for Florida Democrats, who have targeted the seat through the Municipal Victory Program.
FDP Chair Terrie Rizzo released the following statement on McMiller’s win:
“Congratulations to Jacquelyn McMiller for making the run-off for Fort Myers Mayor! Jacquelyn gave this race her heart and soul, and it showed. The people of Fort Myers are looking for change, and Ms. McMiller is offering it. The Florida Democratic Party and the Lee County Democratic Party are so proud to support Jacquelyn as a Municipal Victory Candidate and we welcome her to the Florida Democratic Party Sunshine Slate. We will do everything we can to ensure that she wins in November.”
McMiller’s campaign has been supported by Lee County Democrats and the Florida Democratic Party’s Municipal Victory Program which has helped the campaign with digital advertising, fundraising, organizing and political communications. McMiller announced her candidacy for Mayor of Fort Myers to address issues such as criminal activity and corruption in the city’s police department, and in response to the current mayor’s failure in leadership.
