Tallahassee, FL — In response to Ron DeSantis’s statement on government spending during tonight’s Republican presidential debate, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:
“It’s rich to hear Ron talk about responsible spending after passing the largest budget in the history of Florida,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “He presided over unprecedented levels of spending while refusing nearly half a billion dollars in federal funding that would have put money back into the pockets of Floridians.
“Furthermore, Republicans are quick to shout about government spending, but they increase the deficit every chance they get — and they do it in the form of corporate handouts, tax breaks for billionaires, and irresponsible defense spending. Meanwhile, Speaker McCarthy’s proposed budget cuts target programs that help average Americans get by, including pell grants, child care, education, and a 27 percent cut to Social Security and Medicare.
“Shutting down the government over programs that put money back into pockets is no way to address government spending. Taxpayers deserve a government that works for them, not for wealthy tax cheats like Donald Trump.”
