– Women across Florida will die or be put in jeopardy due to an abortion ban that will soon become state law again, Democratic Palm Beach County lawmakers warned on Thursday, responding to Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott supporting it.
– They took Scott to task for voicing support for the ban last week, urging voters to reject him in November and also to vote Yes on Amendment 4 to enshrine reproductive rights in the Florida Constitution.
– It offers no grace for the woman who doesn’t know she’s pregnant,” she said. “It offers no grace for the rape victim who’s forced to go to the police before getting an abortion. It offers no grace for the woman who receives the heartbreaking news the baby she’s carrying has severe fetal abnormalities.”
– “Unless we fight back, unless women and the men who love them, in every corner of our state, show up to vote like our rights depend on it, because they do, Rick Scott and Republican extremists in Tallahassee won’t stop eliminating abortion access,” former Palm Beach Gardens Mayor Rachelle Litt said at Thursday’s event.
– Scott also is not co-sponsoring a U.S. Senate bill by Illinois Democrat Tammy Duckworth to codify protections into federal law for in-vitro fertilization, where a sperm and egg are combined in a laboratory to form a fetus.
