ON DACA’S 12TH ANNIVERSARY, PROTECTIONS FOR DREAMERS ARE MORE IN DANGER THAN EVER
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), created in 2012 by President Obama, provided temporary protection to undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. The Biden-Harris administration has taken significant steps to protect Dreamers, including several calls for Congress to provide Dreamers a path to citizenship and a plan to expand health coverage for DACA beneficiaries. On the 12th anniversary of DACA, the Florida Democratic Party released the following statement:
“Thanks to DACA, Dreamers have been able to access higher education, secure jobs, start families, buy homes, open businesses, and contribute billions of dollars to our nation’s economy, but the program has never been in more danger than it is today,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. “With the possibility of a second Donald Trump presidential term, DACA is in jeopardy. Trump challenged DACA in court to eliminate the program during his presidency, and there is no doubt he will try again. Trump has already told us exactly what he’ll do as president — run the largest deportation program in American history and he’s repeatedly called immigrants “animals” and “criminals.”
“It’s been over a decade and Dreamers still don’t have permanent protections. On the 12th anniversary of DACA, we renew our calls on Congress to act swiftly to provide solutions — a path to citizenship that will guarantee all Dreamers the legal status they deserve.”
