Florida Democrats Congratulate U.S. Senate Nominee Debbie Mucarsel-Powell
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released the following statement congratulating Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on becoming the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate:
“Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a champion for working families and reproductive freedom, and Florida needs her voice in the Senate. Florida Democrats are 100 percent behind her as our nominee to defeat Rick Scott and his self-serving agenda: banning abortion nationwide, ripping away seniors’ Social Security and Medicare, and raising taxes on the middle class while cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy like himself. Florida Democrats are ready to get to work to elect Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and send Rick Scott packing once and for all.”
What to know about Rick Scott’s extreme, self-serving agenda:
Scott supported a national abortion ban and says he would support “any” anti-choice bill.
- Rick Scott: “If I was the sitting governor, and the six-week abortion ban came in front of me, I would sign it. I’ve always said I would sign it.”
- On the day Florida’s abortion ban took effect, Rick Scott said he would sign “any” anti-abortion legislation.
- Scott voted against protecting access to contraception and IVF treatment and then lied about it.
Scott’s signature plan to end Social Security and Medicare as we know them would spike costs for seniors and families and rip away hard-earned benefits.
- Mitch McConnell on Rick Scott’s disastrous signature plan: “A bad idea.”
Scott plans to raise taxes on the middle class while lowering taxes for corporations and the wealthy, like himself.
- Fox News: “…that would raise taxes on half of Americans and potentially sunset programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.”
- Scott’s plan would raise taxes on 40% of Floridians, including working families and active-duty military.
- Gainesville Sun: “Florida Gov. Rick Scott was in Washington this week not to seek to improve the legislation for most Floridians, but to fight for the tax cuts benefiting a small sliver of the state population — including himself.”
Scott “took responsibility” for overseeing the largest Medicare fraud in U.S. history.
- As CEO, Scott’s for-profit hospital company plead guilty to defrauding the government and was fined a record $1.7 billion.
- Scott walked away with a $300 million golden parachute he used to buy his way into public office.
