FLORIDA DEMOCRATS RESPOND TO PASSAGE OF TRUMP ACT
On Tuesday night, the Florida House and Senate passed the TRUMP Act (Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Immigration Policy), sending it to the governor to sign or veto. In response, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:
“Florida Republicans have lost their damn minds this week,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “What started as just another political stunt from Ron has turned into an out of control reality TV show that is going to have drastic consequences for immigrants in Florida. Floridians deserve real solutions to our broken immigration system, not rushed bills cooked up overnight that will hurt workers, businesses, and our economy.
“Despite attempts from Democrats to protect students, this legislation promises to kick Dreamers out of college before they can finish their degree and gives huge bonuses to local law enforcement for working with ICE to ramp up deportations. It’s an unconscionable abuse of power for a state legislature.
“Now, our lame duck governor must decide if he’ll veto this bill or go home with egg on his face. Pass the popcorn.”
