Florida Democratic Party Statement on U.S. Special Envoy Meeting with Maduro Regime

Today, it was reported that Trump-appointed Special Envoy Ric Grenell had a meeting with Venezuela’s Communist Dictator Nicolás Maduro and his regime to negotiate a deal. In response, the Florida Democratic Party released the following statement:

“The Trump Administration is working to directly undermine Venezuela’s transition of power to President-Elect Edmundo Gonzalez by negotiating with dictator Nicolás Maduro,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “To add insult to injury, this meeting was about Trump’s plans to cruelly deport Venezuelans to Maduro’s dictatorial regime to possibly face kidnapping or worse.

“Donald Trump promised he would be a dictator on day one and he’s delivering on that promise to Venezuelans. Just this week, they rescinded an order extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly 300,000 TPS recipients in Florida. Once again, Trump is making it clear that he never intended to be an ally to the Venezuelan people and many in the community who voted for him.

“And for those who thought they had an ally in spineless Secretary of State Marco Rubio, it took just over 10 days to see his true colors as the United States prepares to co-sign on a deal that will return Venezuelans to the hands of a dictatorship many worked so hard to escape.

“The Florida Democratic Party joins Democratic congressional leaders in calling for transparency on the meeting between the U.S. Special Envoy and the Maduro regime and urges the Administration to provide a briefing on the matter without delay. Floridians deserve to know.”
