Florida Democrats Mourn the Death of Longtime North Florida Union Leader, Russell Harper

The Florida Democratic Party is saddened to learn of the passing of longtime labor leader, Russell Harper. Chair Nikki Fried released the following statement upon hearing the news:

“The sudden death of Russell Harper has sent waves of shock and grief across the State. At the heart of the North Florida labor community, his thoughtfulness, diligence, and quick wit will be missed by many,” Chair Fried said. “Russell believed in showing up for people, especially in solidarity with his Sisters and Brothers in the labor movement. That was no more evident than in how he served them for decades through his work on the Democratic Labor Caucus, and, as President of the North Florida Central Labor Council and as Business Manager of IBEW Local Union 177.”

Duval County DEC Chair Daniel Henry added, “Russell was a true institution—not just here in Duval, but in the FL AFL-CIO and Democratic Labor Caucus. His leadership of the North Florida Central Labor Council had a profoundly positive impact on families in our community, and he was deeply committed to improving conditions for all working people. I will miss him greatly not only as the Duval County DEC Parliamentarian, but as my friend.”
