Florida Democratic Party and the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida Unite for “Seen, Heard, And Free” Day of Action Amid Threats to Democracy
The Florida Democratic Party (FDP) and the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida (DBCF) today jointly launched the Seen, Heard, and Free Day of Action, a statewide initiative uplifting the voices of Floridians standing up for their rights and freedoms in the face of disenfranchisement, censorship, discrimination, and political attacks.
“The fight for freedom in Florida has always been inseparable from the fight for the ballot,” said Armando R. Grundy-Gomes, State President of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida. “Today, as the Supreme Court of the United States hears a case that could dismantle what remains of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a cornerstone of racial justice and the very law that made democracy real for Black Americans, we must face the truth: our freedoms are once again on trial.
From the Ocoee and Rosewood massacres to the courageous organizers of the modern civil rights era, Black Floridians have paid the highest price to expand and protect the right to vote. We cannot claim to honor freedom while our most sacred democratic protections hang by a thread.
Our call to be Seen, Heard, and Free is not a slogan; it is a mandate. It is a reminder that freedom without the vote is freedom in name only. The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida stands ready to defend that right with the same courage, faith, and strategic resolve that our ancestors showed when they refused to be silenced. This is our clarion call: to protect the franchise, to organize our communities, and to meet this moment with unity, urgency, and moral clarity. History is watching, and so are our children.”
The Seen, Heard, and Free Day of Action honors the moments that have shaped our collective call for justice. This year’s observance also recognizes the birthday of George Floyd, whose life and legacy reignited a global movement for equality and accountability.
“On October 14, we’re reminding Floridians: you matter, and you are worth fighting for,” said Nikki Fried, Chair of the Florida Democratic Party. “The right to speak freely, learn openly, and live without fear are freedoms worth defending. Florida Democrats are fighting for affordable living, quality healthcare, and dignity for every person and family in our state, including immigrants. Together, we’re taking back the narrative and centering this moment on the people we love, the freedoms we cherish, and the Florida we’re fighting for.”
From community canvasses and voter registration drives to public education forums, Democrats across Florida are organizing year-round in solidarity to defend democracy, protect the right to vote, and ensure that every Floridian—regardless of race, zip code, or income—is truly seen, heard, and free.
