PRESS ADVISORY: Rick Scott Dodges Invite to Gun and School Violence Safety Forum
Local groups partner to host Forum in Tallahassee
Tallahassee, FL.– This Saturday, across the state and the nation, town halls and forums will be held to discuss gun violence. While Democratic leaders have shown up to talk about the issue and solutions to gun violence, Republican leaders continue to hide from the issue.
The latest lawmaker to ignore an invite is Rick Scott, who was invited to the Stop the Violence School Panel being held in Tallahassee on Saturday. Instead, several other local Democratic leaders will participate to discuss gun violence.
“It’s no surprise Rick Scott would avoid discussing the issue of gun violence and school safety with community members who are actually affected by it because he’s only looking out for himself,” said FDP Spokesman Sebastian Kitchen.
“Scott’s record on guns speaks for itself – the NRA has always come before the safety of our students, just like he’s always put himself over the state of Florida.”
As detailed in a recent Sun Sentinel editorial, “after Sandy Hook, Pulse, the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting or any other mass shooting, Scott did nothing on guns or school safety.” Scott has also barred doctors from asking patients about whether they have access to firearms, restricted local communities from passing stricter gun safety regulations, and slashed funding for mental health and school safety programs while giving taxpayer funded incentives to assault weapons producers. His most recent proposal has been called “woefully inadequate” by gun safety advocates and ignores the Parkland student’s demand for an assault weapons ban.
