Florida Democratic Party Responds to Republican Attempts to Strip U.S. Citizens of Voting Rights
TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Democratic Party released the following statement after Republicans in both chambers of the Florida Legislature passed a bill making it harder to vote and more difficult to access the ballot box:
“In the cover of night, Florida Republicans made it harder for U.S. citizens to vote,” said Florida Democratic Party Chair, Nikki Fried. “While Democrats, civic groups, and voters voiced their concerns to stop this harmful policy, Republicans decided citizens’ voices didn’t matter and voted to disenfranchise hardworking Floridians.
“If enacted as planned in 2027, this legislation could remove thousands of eligible U.S. citizens from the voter rolls and block others from registering.
Florida’s Republican lawmakers love to say we have the safest elections in the country– but this isn’t about election security. It’s already illegal for non-citizens to vote and the penalties are severe. This is about making voting harder for Floridians so that politicians aren’t held accountable to the people.
These bills would hurt the very Floridians who are already struggling the most with the skyrocketing cost of living in our state: seniors, young people, women, and working class Floridians. 8 Million Floridians don’t have a passport and getting replacements for documents like original birth certificates, or the proof of name change is expensive. Americans should not have an added expense to exercise their right to vote.
Signing this bill into law would be reckless, litigious, and against the best interest of the people of Florida. The Florida Democratic Party will always demand the franchise and protect the right to vote.”
